Shawl We?

Summer 2008 started with a big controversial commercial staring Rachel Ray for Dunkin Doughnuts. Viewers were offended by a scarf she wore which was described as a keffiyeh which is worn by Arab men to resemble a murderous Palestinian jihad. Since May of 2008 several retailers have recreated these scarves including Urban Outfitters, Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, and American Eagle.

Although most trendsetters of the summer are not interested in reflecting this Arab symbol, the look has been quickly picked up by young shoppers. These silk scarves are seen in various colors and prints and are a great staple accessory for an everyday look. They can be worn tied loosely around the neck, pulling back your hair, or even wrapped around your head.

Even though trend forecasters predicted silk scarves being the hot item for the summer of 2008 long before the controversial commercial raised eyebrows, it’s interesting to question whether or not the trend "tied" due to controversy or popularity. After all, fashion is all about taking risks, standing out, and personal interpretation.ny
